Antique 19th Century William Forbes & Ball, Black & Co. Coin Silver 8-Piece Tea & Coffee Set with August Fraumont Tray – Hand-Chased Rococo Design and A.A.E. Monogram

This exceptional 8-piece tea and coffee set was crafted in the mid-19th century by the renowned William Forbes and retailed by Ball, Black & Co. of New York (1851-1874). Unlike sterling silver, this set is made of coin silver (90% silver content), which was the standard for fine American silverware before the widespread adoption of sterling in the late 19th century. Weight of all the tea set pieces comes out to 6749 grams.

Additionally, the exquisite antique French sterling silver tray, crafted by renowned Parisian silversmith Fraumont, dates to the mid-19th century. Featuring an ornate Rococo-style design, the tray showcases intricate hand-chased floral and scrollwork patterns, a scalloped border, and elegant double handles. The underside bears the Fraumont maker’s mark and a French silver guarantee hallmark, confirming its .950 sterling silver purity. The Mercury head showcased in photos. Measuring approximately 23” x 17.5” and weighing nearly 10 lbs, this exceptional piece was likely crafted for the luxury market, possibly for export. A magnificent addition to any fine silver collection, this tray embodies the elegance of 19th-century French craftsmanship.

The set features an intricate Rococo Revival design, with elaborate hand-engraved floral and scrollwork patterns. Each piece bears the elegant monogram “A.A.E.” and is adorned with a finely detailed family crest, possibly indicating noble lineage, accompanied by a Latin motto referencing virtue.
